MARQUIS ANTHONY : From the Turntables to the Microphone
SOUL STORIES: MARQUIS ANTHONY
From the Turntables to the Microphone – A Lifetime of Music, Rhythm and Mixing
For some DJs, music is simply something they play. For others, it's a lifelong passion, an instinct and a way of expressing themselves. For Marquis Anthony, it's always been about the music, the rhythm and the art of bringing records together.
With more than 30 years of experience behind the decks, Marquis has spent much of his musical life entertaining audiences in nightclubs, bars and venues. But his journey into radio presenting is a much more recent adventure, and one he's thoroughly enjoying.

East London Roots and a Musical Education Like No Other
Born in East London, Marquis moved to Buckinghamshire at the age of eight, where he has lived ever since.
Growing up, his musical education was anything but predictable.
His mother played an important role in shaping his appreciation of music, introducing him to an extraordinary variety of artists and styles. One minute it could be the smooth country sounds of Jim Reeves, the next the unmistakable reggae rhythms of John Holt, followed by the hard-hitting energy of Public Enemy.

Quite a musical combination!
But that diversity would become one of Marquis's greatest strengths. Rather than being confined to a single genre, he developed an appreciation for different rhythms, sounds and musical influences.
It taught him something important: great music doesn't have to fit neatly into one category.
From American Football to the DJ Booth
Music wasn't Marquis's only passion growing up.
He also played American football, representing a couple of counties and developing the discipline, determination and competitive spirit that come with playing a demanding team sport.

And while American football and DJing might seem worlds apart, they have more in common than you might imagine.
Both require timing, anticipation, concentration and the ability to react instinctively to what's happening around you.
On the football field, it's about reading the game.
Behind the turntables, it's about reading the crowd.
And Marquis has spent more than three decades perfecting that particular skill.
Thirty Years Behind the Decks
Long before he ever considered picking up a radio microphone, Marquis was already an experienced DJ.
Nightclubs, bars and live venues became his musical playground, giving him the opportunity to develop his craft, experiment with different sounds and discover the satisfaction of keeping a dancefloor moving.
For Marquis, DJing has never been simply about playing one record after another.
He's a turntablist and mixer at heart.
It's the creativity of blending beats, matching rhythms and building a seamless musical journey that really excites him.
Knowing when to introduce the next track, how to maintain the energy and when to surprise an audience is something that comes with years of experience.
And after more than 30 years behind the decks, that instinct has become second nature.

A New Challenge: Finding His Radio Voice
Interestingly, despite decades of DJ experience, Marquis didn't step behind a microphone until around five years ago.
For someone so comfortable controlling a dancefloor, the world of radio presenting presented an entirely different challenge.
Suddenly, it wasn't just about choosing the right records or delivering the perfect mix.
It was about communicating with listeners, developing a presenting style and learning how to connect with an audience through words as well as music.
Marquis is the first to admit that he's still learning.
And that's part of the enjoyment.
While mixing will always be his first love, he's embracing the opportunity to develop as a broadcaster, bringing his years of musical experience into a new environment.

The beauty of radio is that it allows him to combine both worlds: the freedom to blend beats and create exciting musical transitions, alongside the personal connection that comes from speaking directly to listeners.

The Journey Is Only Just Beginning

He's already mastered the art of entertaining a dancefloor. Now he's bringing that same passion, instinct and musical knowledge to listeners around the world.
Because when you've spent over three decades entertaining audiences, you understand one fundamental truth:
It's not just what you play. It's how you play it.
And for Marquis Anthony, the next chapter is looking particularly bright.
