Meet DJ Jazzy Lady
For DJ Jazzy Lady, radio has always been about more than introducing one record and moving on to the next. It’s about sharing the music, the memories and the stories that make a great song stay with you.

Her broadcasting journey began on London pirate radio in the late 1980s. Her first station was Lightning Radio, where she began finding her feet behind the mic. She later joined Tony Williams’ Rockers FM, and by then listeners already knew her as Jazzy Lady. Those early days gave her a taste for radio that never left her—and helped shape the warm, confident style she brings to her shows today.

Jazzy Lady’s love of radio also led her towards journalism. Around 1993–94, she trained at CSV Media in Thamesmead, where she was taught and mentored by Edmond “Syd” Burke, who was associated with the BBC’s Rice and Peas programme. It was a chance to learn more about telling stories and communicating with an audience—skills that would sit naturally alongside her love of music.

Around 1994, she became involved with BRIA FM, the annual radio station connected to the British Reggae Industry Awards. It was a special opportunity to be part of an event celebrating reggae music and its contribution to British culture. Jazzy Lady also presented an award at the ceremony, which was televised by BET—an unforgettable moment in her radio journey.

Her curiosity about broadcasting didn’t stop with traditional radio. In the late 1990s or early 2000s, she got involved with Rhythm365 and discovered internet radio for the first time. It was a very different world from online broadcasting today, but she could see the possibilities. The chance to share music with listeners beyond the reach of a local transmitter was exciting—and it gave her an early glimpse of how radio would continue to change.

When it comes to music, Jazzy Lady is proudly a funk and boogie girl. But she has never wanted to be boxed into one sound. Soul, jazz-funk, disco, post-disco and R&B all have a place in her musical world, especially the richly arranged, beautifully produced grooves of the 1970s and ’80s. She loves the details: the bassline that draws you in, the backing vocals that lift a chorus, the perfect arrangement and that special moment when a record just clicks.

There’s always room for discovery, too. Jazzy Lady enjoys seeking out new and independent artists and hearing how the sounds she loves are being carried forward by a new generation. A fresh track can have the spirit of a classic while bringing something entirely its own—and finding that connection is part of the fun.

That sense of discovery comes through in the way she presents. Jazzy Lady is warm, conversational and full of energy, with the music always at the heart of the show. She wants listeners to feel included, as though they’re sharing a great record together. And when there’s a story worth telling, she loves taking a little time to explore it.

Who made the record? Which label released it? What did the producer bring to the sound? Which musicians or songwriters helped create that moment? Those details can make you hear a familiar track in a completely new way. Jazzy Lady brings that curiosity to features such as the Jazzylady Record Box, Jazzylady Gem and Behind the Groove—each one offering another way into the music.

Of course, some of the most powerful stories belong to the listeners. A song can bring back a memory in seconds: a special person, a night out, a long drive, a first dance or a time in life you thought you’d forgotten. Hearing what a record means to someone is one of the great pleasures of broadcasting for Jazzy Lady. Music connects people, even when they’re listening from different places.

And after all these years, that first spark is still there. Jazzy Lady still gets genuinely excited when she hears a great record. For her, radio isn’t about playing music just to fill a slot. It’s about choosing songs with care, creating a feeling, sharing the stories behind them and giving listeners something to enjoy together.
